Nottinghamshire logistics firm commits to supporting the Armed Forces Community

Mitchells of Mansfield

Nottinghamshire-based logistics firm, Mitchells of Mansfield a Palletways UK member, has reaffirmed its commitment to support the Armed Forces community by signing the Armed Forces Covenant. This is one of the many actions the firm has taken to support the wider community in and around the Nottinghamshire area.

The decision to sign the Armed Forces Covenant was spurred by the inspiring fundraising led by Derek Wells, an ex-forces class two driver at Mitchells. Upon learning that Derek was participating in his third fundraising activity for the Light Infantry Veterans Association and The 1st Battalion Light Infantry, which involved a daring skydive this year, Richard Montgomery, managing director for Mitchells of Mansfield, was eager to demonstrate the company's unwavering support.

Despite Derek’s fear of heights, he bravely jumped from a plane at 15,000 feet, raising over £1,200 in funds towards the veterans associations.

Derek said: “The Light Infantry Veterans Association and The 1st Battalion Light Infantry are two causes close to my heart. Whilst I’m not the biggest fan of heights, it is important to raise awareness to help our veterans stay connected and demonstrate that there is help out there after returning to civvy street.”

Richard said: “Derek’s attitude towards supporting veterans inspires us and we were proud to sponsor his most recent fundraising activity.

“The Armed Forces community does so much for us and is the first line of defence in times of crisis, whilst others run away from danger, they run towards it. As a community and as a business, it is vital for us to ensure veterans and those who are preparing to leave the Armed Forces experience a seamless transition into everyday life.

“By signing the Armed Forces Covenant, Mitchells is taking an important step towards providing a more inclusive environment for veterans whilst also being flexible and supportive to those at within the business who are reservists or who have spouses and partners in the Armed Forces.

“This pledge recognises the value of the armed forces community and will encourage veterans to be invaluable assets within the logistics and supply chain industry. Signing the covenant is not only the right thing to do, but we also hope it will inspire other firms within our sector to follow suit.

“We look forward to continuing our support for the armed forces and working with local career and job fairs to help those leaving the armed forces find the right opportunities.”
